The week before the San Antonio Opera ends its current season with a star recital and a large production, the organization will formally announce its 2010-11 season today.
Four operas each, two of them paired in a double bill, will be performed three times. The double bill is set for Municipal Auditorium, and the other two will be staged at Lila Cockrell Theater.
The operas — “Pagliacci” composed by Ruggero Leoncavallo; “Suor Angelica” by Giacomo Puccini; “The Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and “H.M.S. Pinafore” by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert — are a combination of short, dramatic stories and longer light, entertaining productions.
“We're pounding on all eight cylinders,” said Opera San Antonio founder and artistic director Mark Richter, referring to the upcoming season, plus the organization's spring 2011 vocal competition, a series of chamber works and its resident artist program.
Conducting Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro” will be 93-year-old Anton Coppola, an esteemed opera conductor and composer who is the uncle of the movie director Francis Ford Coppola and the great uncle of actor Nicolas Cage.
